Mt Hiwi Lodge is situated 12km inland from Waverley, south/west coast of the
North Island, New Zealand. It is an easy 40 min scenic country drive from
Wanganui. The lodge is a full log cabin constructed lodge that sleeps 6-10
people comfortably. It sits on a ridge over looking 80 acres of own, private
native bush and borders a 6-7 acre lake.
The lodge is a self-catering private retreat that consists of a main double
bedroom with a queen size bed, a loft with 4 single beds and a pool table.
There is also a pull out couch that converts into a double bed and extra
mattresses. It has a fully appointed kitchen and full bathroom, shower,
toilet and laundry facilities. The lodge boasts large open plan living areas
and is heated by a wood fire. There is a wood/ gas heated outdoor bath to
enjoy the peaceful evenings away from urbanisation. There is a large lawn
suitable for games and plenty of room for pitching tents.
Private Native Bush
The surrounding bush is predominantly beech and tawa and has been identified
by DOC. As having some of the best open water to dry ridge vegetation
sequences in the area. It boasts an impressive array of native flora and
fauna; native bird life is also in abundance including fern birds, spotless
crakes, wood pigeon, north island robin and NZ falcon. There is also brown
kiwi known to be in the area.
Walking Tracks & Walks
Mt Hiwi Lodge has several walking tracks through its private native bush and
will definitely be an enjoyable and challenging outing with the combination
of steep terrain and heavy/ dense bush. The lodge is the perfect retreat for
those wanting privacy and seclusion, a real chance to get away and recoup
from the stresses of modern life. It is suitable for couples, families and
larger groups as well as conferences/ workshops and special events.
Local Activities
Activities surrounding the lodge and local area include camping, bush walks,
experimenting with bush craft, fishing and swimming.
The Mt Hiwi Trig track (2km up road) is a benched track that runs through
about 600ha of DOC administered trust land and is thick native bush with
some incredible views of the area.
The Waverley area has many attractions with a ruggedly beautiful west coast
beach, several nature walks and a vibrant town centre with many shops and
cafés
